Physiotherapists & Exercise Physiologists offer a range of services to improve and maintain physical health and wellbeing.
At BHN, our team of experienced Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists work with adults experiencing, or at risk of developing, pain, injury, or dysfunction in relation to musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological conditions, or chronic disease.
Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists are supported by allied health assistants who help run a range of 1:1 and group programs.
What is the difference between Exercise Physiology (EP) and Physiotherapy?
There are many areas that overlap in these professions. The main difference is Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat conditions with hands-on treatment as well as prescribing exercise. Exercise Physiologists specialise in hands-off treatment such as exercise programs for prevention, rehabilitation and maintenance of health.
Other important points of difference include:
- Physiotherapists manage all stages of injury from acute to chronic, including diagnosis, treatment and can prescribe walking aids if required.
- Exercise Physiologists manage recovery phases of injury and chronic injuries with exercise.
- Exercise Physiologists specialise in areas of chronic disease where exercise is recommended. Common conditions include cancer, mental health, diabetes, osteoporosis, weight management, lung and heart conditions.
- Exercise Physiologists are highly skilled in exercise programming for injury prevention.
Should I see a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist?
Many clients present with chronic and complex health issues that may require one or both services. Generally, a Physiotherapy referral is the first step for assessment and will refer onto an Exercise Physiologist if required.
Exceptions include referrals for mental health and key chronic conditions listed above where there are no issues impacting muscles or bones. These can be referred directly to an Exercise Physiologist.
